Visit Africa

When is the best time to visit Africa for business?

Weather is the easy part of the timing question. The commercial calendar and, for sourcing, the harvest calendar matter more.

Weather windows in East Africa

The drier stretches, broadly January to March and July to October, are the most dependable for travel and site visits in East Africa. Long rains around April and May can complicate road travel to rural facilities, which matters if your itinerary includes farms, processing sites or upcountry operations rather than city meetings alone.

The commercial calendar

Several periods are best avoided. Much of the region slows from mid-December into early January. Ramadan affects working hours and scheduling in markets with significant Muslim populations, and Eid periods see extended closures. National public holidays and, in some markets, election periods also disrupt availability of both counterparties and officials.

Checking the specific market's calendar before fixing dates avoids arriving in a week when the people you need are unavailable.

Build the trip around an expo

Timing a visit to coincide with a sector trade expo is usually the highest-return scheduling decision available. Expos concentrate qualified counterparties in one place, compress weeks of separate meetings into days, and let you assess several suppliers or buyers against each other directly. Adding site visits either side of the expo makes the trip do double duty.

For sourcing, follow the harvest

If you are sourcing agricultural products, visiting during harvest and processing tells you what an off-season visit cannot: actual quality, real handling practice, genuine throughput and how the operation performs under pressure. A spotless facility in the off-season is a poor predictor of how it runs at peak.

Harvest windows vary by crop and region, so this generally means scheduling around your specific commodity rather than a general season.

Allow more time than the calendar suggests

Traffic in major cities is substantial and meetings shift. A schedule packed to capacity will not survive contact with the day. Building slack between appointments, and treating four solid meetings as a full day rather than seven, produces better outcomes than an itinerary that looks efficient on paper.

We schedule delegations around the expo, harvest and commercial calendars of your target market, not just the weather.
