How long does it take to register a business in Kenya?
Incorporation is fast. Becoming a company that can actually trade takes longer, and the gap between the two is where most plans slip.
Incorporation: one to two weeks
Kenya registers companies through the eCitizen platform, and the process is genuinely quick by regional standards. Once your proposed name clears reservation, filing the incorporation documents and receiving a certificate of incorporation commonly takes one to two weeks.
Name reservation is the step most likely to add delay, since rejections for similarity to an existing name are common. Submitting two or three alternatives at once avoids losing days to a resubmission.
What has to happen after incorporation
A certificate of incorporation alone does not let you trade. The sequence that follows typically includes:
- KRA tax registration and a PIN for the company and its directors
- A corporate bank account, subject to bank compliance and know-your-customer review
- A single business permit from the relevant county government
- NSSF and SHIF registration once you have employees
- Sector licences where your activity requires them
- Work permits or special passes for foreign directors and staff
The bank account is usually the bottleneck
Corporate account opening is consistently the slowest step for foreign-owned companies. Compliance review on beneficial ownership, source of funds and director identification takes time, and requirements differ noticeably between banks.
Starting the bank conversation in parallel with incorporation rather than after it is the single most effective way to compress the overall timeline. So is choosing a bank with an established process for foreign-owned entities rather than whichever is nearest.
Work permits run on their own clock
If foreign directors or staff need to be resident and working in Kenya, permit processing is measured in months rather than weeks and is largely outside your control. Where a project cannot wait, a special pass can bridge the gap while the substantive permit is processed.
A realistic plan
Plan for one to three months from starting incorporation to being genuinely operational, with the upper end applying if you need a work permit or a sector licence. Treating the incorporation certificate as the finish line is the error that turns a two-month setup into a six-month one.
We run Kenyan company setup end to end, sequencing the bank, tax, permit and licensing steps in parallel rather than one after another.
