How much does freight shipping to Africa cost?
The freight rate you are quoted is one line on a bill with many lines. Comparing quotes on that line alone is how buyers end up with the more expensive option.
How sea freight is priced
Full container loads are priced per container, with the twenty-foot and forty-foot units as standard. Smaller consignments move as less-than-container-load, priced per cubic metre or per tonne, whichever produces the higher charge. Sea freight is dramatically cheaper per unit of volume and is the default for anything that is not urgent or perishable.
Rates move with fuel costs, vessel capacity and seasonal demand, and they can shift considerably within a year, so a rate quoted months ahead is indicative rather than fixed.
How air freight is priced
Air freight is charged on chargeable weight, the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which penalises bulky low-density cargo. It typically costs several times sea freight and is justified for high-value goods, perishables, urgent replacements or samples where transit time changes the commercial outcome.
The charges that sit beyond the freight rate
A realistic landed cost includes:
- Origin charges, export clearance and documentation
- Terminal handling at both ends
- Destination customs clearance and agency fees
- Import duty, VAT and applicable levies
- Port storage and container demurrage if clearance is slow
- Inland haulage to the final delivery point
- Cargo insurance
On many routes these together exceed the ocean freight itself, particularly where clearance is delayed and storage accrues.
Demurrage is the avoidable cost
Containers carry limited free time at the port. Once it expires, demurrage and storage accumulate daily and escalate. Because these charges are driven by clearance readiness rather than by the shipping line, they are largely within your control: complete documentation lodged before arrival is what prevents them.
Compare on landed cost, always
A forwarder quoting an attractive ocean rate with high destination charges can easily cost more than one quoting a higher rate with lower charges. Ask for an all-in landed cost estimate to your delivery address, itemised, and compare those. Quotes that decline to itemise are usually declining for a reason.
